2023 SEA Games Torch Arrives in Malaysia

MALAYSIA: The torch relay for the 2023 SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games made its way to the Malaysian city of Putrajaya this morning, 11 April 2023.

Malaysian athletes relayed over 3.3km with the torch in hand. CAMSOC officials said the event, hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, ran smoothly and concluded successfully. They noted it was a meaningful collaboration between the Cambodia’s and Malaysia’s sports delegates.

Deputy President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, said he was pleased that the National Olympic Committee welcomed the relay to Malaysia despite the difficulties of organizing the event during the month of Ramadan.

Attending the relay were eight Malaysian athletes who had won gold medals from the games between 1981 and 2019. Secretary of State for the Ministry of Tourism Hor Sarun said that sports have played an important role in strengthening relations between Cambodia and Malaysia, and today's ceremony highlighted the relationship of cooperation between the two countries.

The torch relay will continue on to Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos and will return to Cambodia on 27 April. It will then be carried around the Tonle Sap Lake before arriving at the Morodok Techo National Stadium on 5 May to celebrate the opening day of the games. As of publishing there are only 24 days left until Cambodia kicks off the SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games in Phnom Penh.
